"The foundation of every community includes homes and a robust infrastructure that works for everyone."

So says Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick of the $19 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) awarded to 16 communities in the state this week.

The grants, which the governor's office says will benefit more than 2,800 low- and moderate-income Virginians, "aim to forge affordable housing and essential infrastructure, improving the well-being of our communities in need," says Gov.

Glenn Youngkin, per the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The projects, which will use the CDBG funds from 2018 to 2023, include housing rehabilitation, water and sewer improvements, dental facilities for needed services, and revitalization of downtown districts, reports the Virginian-Pilot.

"By investing in our communities, we are supporting them in the unique ways that they need, with solutions that include their unique voices, all while protecting vulnerable populations and building stronger local economies," says Bryan Horn, director of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
