"It's as cute as possible."
That's how Indiana University Ph.D.
student Callie Rekas describes her new $125 "Creative Movement for PreK" class for kids ages 3-6, which starts this month at Constellation Stage & Screen in Bloomington.
Rekas, who's worked as a full-time nanny in Los Angeles and as a teacher's aide at the university's Campus Children's Center, says the class uses "what a body naturally wants to do"be it dance, reading, art, or musicto teach kids how to manage conflict and competition.
"My creative movement incorporates things other than just dance," says Rekas, who studied dance education at New York University.
"For instance, it's not just ballet or tap.
It uses what a body naturally wants to do."
Students will work on an art project for 15 minutes, then "our reward will be getting to choreograph our very own dance," Rekas says.
"It's wonderful to watch a 3-year-old become a choreographer," she adds.
"My favorite aspect of teaching kids is seeing the lightbulb go off and watching 'in real time' as they get the theater bug."
