Taxation Is Essential for the Ecological Transition

France is planning to triple its carbon tax on fossil fuels over the next five years in an effort to fight climate change, the Guardian reports.

The tax, which will go into effect in 2023, will increase the price of carbon by 50 cents per metric ton in 2023, meaning the cost of a gallon of gasoline will rise 9 cents and the cost of a gallon of diesel by 10 cents.

The price of carbon will also increase each year based on a price set by law, meaning the cost of a ton of carbon will increase by 86 cents in 2023, meaning the price of a gallon of gasoline will rise 9 cents and the price of a ton of diesel by 10 cents.

France is one of only a handful of countries with a carbon tax, which is meant to discourage the use of fossil fuels and encourage the use of less-polluting modes of transport, such as cycling and public transport.

But critics say the tax is unfair to low-income households and rural areas, where cars are often the only means of transportation.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development calls the tax "black taxation," saying it encourages the consumption and production of fossil fuels while supporting economic growth.
